Sony PlayStation South Africa has partnered with MMA fighter, Garreth ‘Soldierboy’ McLellan, to launch an exercise regime that only the toughest will survive.

The God of War Workout

The workout has been developed by McLellan to mark the release of the new God of War game.

The game features the iconic character, Kratos, whose grueling fighting style and impressive physique. This influenced the decision to reach out to McLellan to be the game’s workout ambassador for SA.

“He embodies the spirit of Kratos – he’s relentless, fierce and never backs down. All in all, it was a perfect match,” says Bernice Montague, Marketing Manager for PlayStation South Africa.

The 36-year-old made history when he became the first South African to win at the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Making his professional debut in 2009, he was a two-time EFC Africa champion and EFC Worldwide Champion before he signed with UFC in 2014.

“Being a gamer myself, I was well aware of the God of War franchise, and I jumped at the chance to put together a work out worthy of a legend like Kratos” – Garreth McLellan

 A new form of Axe-rcise

In order to build muscle of mythical proportions, McLellan’s God of War workout encompasses 11 exercises. The workout varies from pull-ups and rope climb to carrying an atlas stone and tyre flips.

It also draws on Tabata, a form of high-intensity interval training that was developed in Tokyo. “When it comes to fighting, Kratos exudes power and raw energy – he’s relentless and every move he makes emphasizes his rage-fuelled strength and skill, Soldierboy explains. “For these reasons, I’ve put together a workout that combines elements of Cross Fit, core conditioning and mixed martial arts.”
