Slimming down can be hard if you don’t know where to start. What foods should you be eating and when should you be eating them? Here, Carolyn Brown, nutritionist at Foodtrainers, gives you five tips that will guide you through your weight loss journey and make sure it’s successful.

1. Eat More

“Adding is going to be as crucial as nixing,” Brown says. “It’s not just about what you quit, but foods you strategically add. I always want to see more vegetables, more fish, and more water”

2. When You Eat Is as Important as What You Eat

Eat your meals in a smaller window of time, Brown recommends. “Look at your eating hours. The goal is [to eat] 12 hours or fewer. This is going to give you some digestive rest.”

3. Make Lunch Your Biggest Meal

“Make lunch larger. A lot of times we eat our biggest meal of the day right before we go to bed,” Brown says. Instead, she recommends making lunch your power meal.

Here’s what your lunch should ideally look like: two cups of vegetables high in fibre, lean protein to help keep you full all day, and fats help your body absorb nutrients.

4. Stop Eating Two Hours Before Bedtime

“Eat dinner on the early side to wake up feeling extra lean,” Brown says. “The earlier you eat dinner, the less full you are when you go to bed. Two hours before bed is the goal.”

5. Cook at Home

Instead of eating out all the time, go homemade, Brown advises. “Cooking your own meals gives you way more control over exactly what you’re eating, and your portion sizes.”
