Bucket Hats & Dresses: Is Nigeria’s Kit The Most Fashionable To Ever Come Out Of The FIFA World Cup?
Whilst it may seem like there is no logical explanation for why a few weeks every few years, we all become obsessed with watching a ball being kicked from foot-to-foot, there actually is.
According to research by sports psychology professor Daniel Wann, fandom is linked to improved happiness with one’s social life and better well-being. Being a team supporter also leads to decreased feelings of loneliness and alienation.
There are various factors that have led people to support different teams this world cup season. Having star players from your favourite teams playing and of course, having your country’s team in the running, are fairly common deciding factors. What is surprising though, is that some teams are gaining support from fans based purely on their kit.
Countries, like France and Brazil have honoured tradition by keeping their kits similar to previous world cups, but not Nigeria.
Nike has created a kit for Nigeria that is so on trend that fans of FIFA, fashion and everything in between are going crazy worldwide. When Nike launched the kit on the 1 June at its flagship store in London, it sold out within minutes.
It’s not just the jersey that’s winning fans over though. It’s the entire line that screams street-style. They’ve designed jackets, dresses, shirts and bucket hats. A matching hip pack (it’s a fanny pack, let’s be honest) will be coming to the line soon, too.
In Nigeria, there’s a massive a demand for the kit. Fake jerseys are flying off the shelves as innovative entrepreneurs import them for cheaper prices, reports News24. One thing’s for sure; people can’t get enough of the it. But Nigeria aren’t new to trendsetting, their 2018 kit actually took inspiration from the Super Eagle’s 1994 kit. At the time, they made a stylish statement in the USA, for their first time in the World Cup competition.
Not only is Nigeria said to be Africa’s best shot at the 2018 FIFA World Cup title, they’ve already won the title of most fashionable.
