Video: Springbok Damian De Allende Has A World Cup Message For SA
MH caught up with Springbok Damian De Allende, just before he left for the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan. The centre gave us some insider information on the importance of breaking your daily routine and how South Africans should be feeling right now.
“Of course preparation is key,” he says. But once you get a gap and the day’s done and the training’s been completed… For me, it’s very important to get away from the game a bit. Just look after yourself and your mind and put yourself in the right space for the next day. Try and appreciate everything else around you,” with Damian saying the Boks look forward to their days off on the golf course, too.
as professional athletes [in any sport], sometimes you get a bit sidetracked and you forgot to enjoy it and I think once you find that enjoyment again you actually thrive
Damian is also known for his strong moves on the field, but according to him, his biggest strength is not his physicality. “At times I’m quite serious when I need to be but I also know when I need to make a joke, and I love making a joke – especially in a team environment,” he says.
“I love to put a smile on a guy’s face. For me that’s important because I feel like sometimes as professional athletes [in any sport], sometimes you get a bit sidetracked and you forget to enjoy it. I think once you find that enjoyment again you actually thrive, and you start being your best, and that’s when you can inspire a lot more people than you actually think you can.”
