This Is How Sleeping In A Noisy Place Can Damage Your Sperm
Night-time noise might be doing some damage below the belt
There’s a whole list of things that can wreck your sperm—everything from what you eat and drink to how much you sleep can have some impact on your swimmers.
But here’s one you may not have thought of: sound. Chronic exposure to noise can up your odds of infertility, a new study in the journal Environmental Pollution found.
In the study, researchers analysed medical data from more than 206,000 men of reproductive age in South Korea. They discovered that guys who were exposed to more noise during the day and at night were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with infertility than those in quieter surroundings.
That link remained even after the scientists adjusted for potential factors that could skew the results, like residential location, exercise, smoking, alcohol consumption, and body mass index.
In fact, men exposed to night-time noise of 55 decibels or greater—for comparison, a normal conversation rings in at about 60 decibels—were 14 percent more likely to receive an infertility diagnosis than those who snoozed in less din.
Now, because this study just observed these guys over a set amount of time, it couldn’t actually prove that louder noises somehow caused infertility.
But prior studies have proposed some possible physiological explanations. For instance, in a study of rats that linked noise to lower sperm concentrations and less mobile sperm, the researchers theorised that a reduction in testosterone may be to blame.
