I know air travel is safe, but I still feel anxious during takeoff. How can I calm myself?
Of course you’re anxious: you’re hurtling down a runway at about 300km an hour, trusting that the mechanics won’t malfunction and the guy in the cockpit got enough sleep. First step: don’t fight it. “Men are trained to tamp down their emotions, but the harder you try to make yourself calm, the less calm you’ll be,” says says Dr Jonathan Bricker, assocate professor of psychology at University of Washington. As the jet takes off, imagine your anxiety as a wave in the ocean – it builds but eventually passes, says Bricker.
