Improve Your Hearing With Antioxidants
Listen up: a higher intake of antioxidants and magnesium may reduce hearing loss, found a recent study.
Noise pollution and ageing already largely contribute to hearing loss, but researchers have found that the formation of free radicals in the inner ear also plays a role in hearing loss. They then did a cross-sectional study in which data from 2, 592 people between the ages of 20-69, who took part in the 2001-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), was analysed.
Higher intake of beta-carotene, vitamin C, and magnesium were all individually linked with better scores in hearing tests than lower intakes, while combined intake was associated with even better scores. This protective effect could negate some of the risk factors for hearing loss, such as smoking, say the authors of the study.
