Don’t Forget about Trans Fats

Men's Health |

Trans fatsforms when hydrogen is added to liquid oils in order to turn them into solid fat. While most food manufacturers have started replacing trans fats with healthier oils for the body the majority still continue its use as it can increase the products shelf life. However a new study sees that trans fats reduce the shelf life of people and may damage memory in young people. These memory problems are just apart of the many health problems suggested to be the cause of trans fats.

“While trans fats increase the shelf life of foods, they reduce the shelf life of people,” said study researcher Dr. Beatrice Golomb. “From a health standpoint, trans fat consumption has been linked to higher body weight, more aggression and heart disease.”

The study looked at 1000 healthy men and calculated the level of trans fats consumption from their own reported diets. Those who reported eating foods containing trans fats at almost every meal were found to have the highest amounts of trans fats consumed.

Furthermore those that consumed more trans fats showed a much worse performance on a word memory test compared to those that did not. The research also found that this effect was more notable in men under 45. The study included other factors, such as participants’ age, education and if they had depression when considering the link between trans fats and memory.

“Trans fats were most strongly linked to worse memory in young and middle-aged men, during their working and career-building years,” Golomb said.

What makes matters worse is that although the amount of trans fats in foods has to be declared on its label many consumers may be eating more trans fats then they are made to believe. This is because products are legally eligible to claim 0g of trans fats as long as the product contains less than 0.5g of it per serving.

From a different study researchers tested 4000 top-selling packaged foods and found that nine percent of those products contained trans fats even though the label said otherwise.
