Researchers wondered what effect listening to music during recovery from intense exercise would have on activity pattern, rate of perceived exertion, and blood lactate concentration.
In this small study they had 20 active young men in their mid-20’s complete a 6-minute run at peak oxygen consumption speed on two different occasions and either listen to motivational music or no music during recovery.
Mean heart rate, perceived exertion, blood lactate, and number of steps taken were measured at 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 minutes post-exercise.
Compared to the no-music occasion, listening to motivational music was associated with an increase in number of steps taken, significantly greater decreases in blood lactate, and reduced perceived exertion.
These results suggest that listening to motivational music during recovery may make it easier and more effective.
