Game Changer: TolA$$Mo
If you watch ENCA’s Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola, you’ll spot comedian TolA$$Mo and his alter-ego MacGyver (an ANCYL-inspired revolutionary). It’s clear that Gola has some competition in the comedic department.
Mo or Mongezi Ngcobondwane as his birth certificate puts it, is a very funny man. The moniker Tol A$$ Mo? Totally Outrageous Laughter Avantgarde Street Style Mo.
The lanky comedian started out in Thembisa at a spot called Poppa Chillaz where he was the MC/Hype Man for the gig. While introducing acts he’d make fun of people in the crowd. After consistently getting a great reception from the punters, he decided to chance his luck at some proper stand-up. His first big chance came at Blues Room in Sandton.
“Trevor Noah, Joey Rasdien. Loyiso Gola Darren Maule were all there. I was just there as someone who bought a ticket to see the show. I kept going from person to person asking how I could get on stage. Finally David Kibuuka gave me chance. He said Mo, “I’ll give you five minutes but if you mess this up you’ll never perform again.””
“In the five minutes I got, I destroyed in front of all those top comedians. People really liked my style. I was on fire.“
He’s still on fire. Mo signed with Takunda Bimha of Podium (at the time the same agent as Trevor Noah, Loyiso Gola, Conrad Koch, David Kibuuka and Kagiso Lediga). Late Nite News has been nominated for an international comedy Emmy. He’s got Mo Love, a reality TV series about his life on Vuzu, and next year he’ll be touring with his one man show Tol A$$ Mo Live.
#BestAdvice: Don’t focus on accumulating wealth
Don’t lose sight of the fact that life is more than just making money and having things. We get so obsessed with how we look and who owns what, what car we are driving. That doesn’t intrigue me. I live for greater things like my family. Don’t focus on material things or accumulating wealth.
