Game Based Movies That Are Actually Worth Watching
FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN
Amazing visuals, big hype, breakthrough tech (it cost $137-million and took four years to make)… All that’s missing is a decent storyline. But the same could be said for Avatar…
STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI
On its own merits, it’s a fun and raucous action movie. And while it was panned by purists for not being true to the game, that’s not necessarily a bad thing –as anybody who saw the outrageously lame mid-Nineties Van Damme adaptation could tell you.
LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER
It may be an obvious choice (give us a break: our other options included Mario Bros), but it’s worth another look – if only for Angelina Jolie’s anatomically-accurate performance as the titular action babe.
Thin on plot but thick on atmosphere (and fog), this creepy horror film keeps the mood of the game, while adding in some movie-style visual tricks.
Timothy Olyphant stars as Agent 47 in this overblown action flick – which movie critics hated, but people who like watching overblown action movies rather enjoyed.

DOA: DEAD OR ALIVE The list of utterly rubbish game-to movie adaptations is long and varied, taking in such stinkers as Double Dragon, BloodRayne and Wing Commander (which was so bad it ended the director’s film career). But you would think – watching the shamelessly and hilariously camp movie trailer – that DOA would be, if not a good movie, then at least a good-looking guilty pleasure. Sadly, and despite the outrageously hot female cast (Jaime Pressly, Holly Valance and a phalanx of NSFW Google search results), you would be wrong. Very, very wrong.
