More benefits of paleo-type diet revealed
Obesity has been linked to the progression of kidney disease, while weight loss has been linked to improvements in kidney function. To date, researchers had not compared the effects of different weight loss diets on kidney function. This is an
important issue because a low-carbohydrate/high-protein diet is thought to have an adverse effect on kidney function. For this study researchers randomly assigned 318 overweight or obese people with mild-to-moderate renal dysfunction to one of three diets for two years: a low-fat diet, the Mediterranean diet, or a low carbohydrate/high-protein diet. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urine microalbumin to-creatinine ratio were measured at the start of the study and again six and 24 months later. All three diets had similar effects on improving eGFR and the urine microalbumin-to-creatinine ratio. Weight loss-related improvements in blood pressure and insulin sensitivity are probably responsible for the benefits seen in this study.
