Beat Your Workout with Beet Juice
Famous for its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, beetroot juice has been known for its ability to reduce blood pressure, improve stamina amongst men and lower the rate of heart disease.
Scientists have discovered another way in which beetroot juice can improve our daily lives; more specifically our workout sessions.
According to a recent study, published in the American Journal of Physiology -Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, amongst the many benefits that this vegetable has to offer; they found that drinking beet juice regularly can increase your performance whilst exercising.
It has to do with the hearts workload and oxygen delivery to the muscles. 14 adult males were recruited for the study and were placed on a strict beetroot juice supplementation for a course of 15 days. They were told to either drink nitrate-rich beetroot juice or nitrate-depleted beetroot juice.
“We were surprised by how little nitrate was needed to see such a large effect,” said Dr Amrita Ahluwalia, the study’s lead author.
Those that drank nitrate-rich beetroot juice had significant drops in blood pressure and more dilated blood vessels whilst exercising and resting. Drinking beet juice also allows the heart to consume less oxygen during exercising; as the blood vessels dilate easily.
Putting the heart under less stress during physical activity but also increases oxygen delivery to the muscles, which is essential.
If you’re wondering where you can find dietary nitrates, well look no further as two beetroots contain as much dietary nitrate as a large bowl of lettuce, 0.2 grams to be exact.
Not only could it be the cheapest workout supplement out there but also the healthiest, as its all natural.
