Despite a diet rich in saturated fats the French suffer a relatively low incidence of coronary heart disease. This is the French Paradox.
When 60 Minutes reported on it 20 years ago, sales of red wine skyrocket 44%. However insufficient evidence meant that wineries couldn’t actually label their product “health food”. Although it’s now widely accepted that moderate consumption of red wine has been linked to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.
There are other benefits, too, such as anti-inflammatory properties and that red wine may help reduce the risk of blood clots. Thanks to its alcohol content and non-alcoholic phytochemicals (natural occurring plant compounds), wine has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, certain cancers and slow the progression of neurological degenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease.
But before you neck that Belthazar remember that if you drink more of what’s recommended your health risks actually go up.
