Crispy Fried Health
Everybody loves fried chicken; maybe even a mouth watering deep fried koeksister now and then but too much fried foods can be really bad for your heart and body according to a new study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
A very large sample of people, around 110 000 participants, who did not have diabetes, cardio vascular disease or cancer from the start, were monitored periodically over 26 years from 1984 until 2010 about how frequently fried foods were consumed both away from and at home.
What this study found was that people who ate fried foods more than four times a week had also registered lowered physical activity, higher BMI’s and a poorer diet overall. This normally included greater consumptions of red meat and sugar-sweetened beverages with a lesser intake of fresh fruits, vegetables and fish.
From the study over 10 000 participants developed type 2 diabetes during the follow-up. From that number it found that those people were eating fried foods daily and were 1.55 times more likely to develop diabetes than those who only ate fried foods less than once a week. Participants, around 5 778 of them, were eating fried foods 4-6 times a week and were 1.23 times more likely to develop coronary artery disease.
Even though the study did not note the kinds of specific foods that were being fried or the oil types used for frying they still believe that the process of frying may spur on all the medical conditions and that it changes the quality and energy density of the food in question.
