4 Ways to Set Realistic Fitness Goals for the New Year
In the pursuit of instant gratification (and overnight abs), we tend to set unrealistic goals in the build-up to the turn of the new year. Reality check: short timelines, impossible growth and meal plans that’ll only sink your ambitions are not the way to go. In 2022, set achievable, long-term goals, writes Callan Sexton, Virgin Active’s Exercise Director.
Here’s his advice to help you achieve those gym-forged resolutions, and enjoy every second of it.
1. Establish a Regular Routine
When you start a new training routine at the beginning of the year, remember that you cannot rush your body’s physiology. Change takes time as it has a cumulative effect. It is only with consistency that we become fitter, healthier and are able to lift heavier weights, run further and push harder.
One way to remain consistent is to plan your schedule ahead of time by mapping out which days you will do which exercises or training routines, and then slotting these sessions into your schedule to help hold yourself accountable. In these early stages, this journey can seem like a daunting prospect, which brings us onto our next point.
2. Set Realistic Goals With Achievable Milestones Along the Way
Start with the end in mind when you draw up your goals of where you want to be by the end of the year. Make sure to account for some rest days in between. And then work your way backwards, by scheduling achievable milestones every few weeks or months, that you know you will be able to reach.
This is the best way to set yourself up for success, which will keep you motivated to continue pushing on in the long run. Remember to celebrate each “W” as it brings you one step closer to your ultimate objective.
3. Get a Spotting or Accountability Buddy
Your mindset determines the degree of your success. On days when you might feel tired, dejected or feel like you don’t have enough time to work out, it may be very helpful to have an accountability buddy, someone who will keep you to your routine – especially when it’s the last thing you want to do.
When exercising with a friend, in a group or team, keep in mind that everybody’s progress will be different, so don’t be too quick to compare results and gains, just remain consistent. Or let Virgin Active have your back.
4. A Personal Trainer Can Guide and Motivate You
If you don’t have a gym buddy and truly want to hold yourself accountable, why not get a Personal Trainer from Virgin Active who can guide you, while ensuring you maintain the right posture, technique and increase your workout loads and reps appropriately.
