5 Live Music Experiences You Can Enjoy From Home
Over the course of the nationwide lockdown, many major music festivals and concert organisations have either postponed or cancelled their events for the year. Many artists have also had to put their tours on hold. But since countries worldwide have gone into lockdown, there has been a rise in livestream musical performances and an increase in online music consumption (especially Lofi Hip Hop)
We’ve compiled a list of different South African platforms, artists and brands that have made an effort to bring the live concert experience into the homes of their fans. So grab your headphones and listen up.
Rocking The Daisies
RTD recently announced that they won’t be having their annual event this year. Instead, the weekend-camping-concert experience urges the ticket holders to maintain their excitement until 2021, with most of their headlining acts – Stormzy, Ari Lennox and more – are still on board. What Daisies fans can also enjoy in the meantime is the official live performances from last year’s festival. South African superstars such as Sho Majozi, Mi Casa and YoungstaCPT have posted their RTD set onto their respective Youtube channels. Check it out!
One of the country’s most prolific hip hop artists, Nasty C has been keeping fans entertained throughout the nationwide lockdown period. In addition to his viral ‘There They Go’ TikTok challenge, The Coolest Kid In Africa welcomed listeners into his studio to perform some of his most recent releases. Accompanied by a selection of figurines and a mini-fridge filled with Red Bull, he showcases his cadence, flow and energy while remaining seated. To top it off, Nasty also hosted a Q&A and released a Visual EP titled ‘The Lost Files’ where he performs songs from his vault of projects.
The 5G Virtual Party
We know what you’re thinking, but no, it’s not a party to celebrate a certain wireless network. It’s actually a collaboration between two of South Africa’s most popular music radio stations, 5FM and GoodHope FM. In teams of three DJs each, the stations will battle each other by performing incredible music mixes for the listeners to enjoy. For the last match, the GoodHope team was made up of Grandmaster Ready D, Dr Jules and DJ Gremlin, and they took on 5FM’s Ryan The DJ, Kyle Cassim and Ms Cosmo. We look forward to more epic battles to come.

Music streaming app JOOX is continuing their #Gig2Earn initiative which aims to assist artists through the lockdown period by providing a platform for them to show their stuff and make an income. The app has launched their ‘Big LIVE’ concert series that will feature performances from major acts in the industry like Cassper Nyovest, while still contributing to the up-and-coming artists on the platform. App users have access to all the entertainment free-of-charge!
The ticketing and cashless app, Howler has quickly adapted their methods to provide exciting online events during lockdown. They recently hosted a three-day digital music festival featuring 33 electronic acts, raising half a million rand in support of a non-profit entertainment relief organisation called SAFE. Upcoming events include the virtual version of one-day festival WeHouse Sundays, as well as the livestream launch of Afrikaans supergroup Die Heeuwels Fantasies’ new album.
