You’d probably assume that a woman who looks like Adrianne Palicki would tend to date, you know, those guys – the great-hair, perfect-teeth ones who look as if they were spat out of a dude factory. But you’d be wrong. “None of my ex-boyfriends have anything in common,” says 26-year-old Palicki, leggy star of the film Legion. “I don’t really worry about whether a guy’s a certain type, as long as there’s a connection.” To build one with any woman, just follow her advice.

DON’T PLAY IT SAFE.
“I want to know up front what a guy is all about,” Palicki says. “So I’m just, like, ‘Yeah, I quote Spaceballs. You got a problem with it? You’re out.’”
Take the hint and don’t hide your quirks or interests. It’s a lot easier to connect with a woman over your passions – even wacky ones – than if you stick to idle chit-chat.

KNOW HER WEAKNESS.
One of Palicki’s favourite gifts ever was a basket of gluten-free cupcakes. Palicki has coeliac disease, and the gift giver won major points for catering to her specific needs. Find your own ways to help out. Her feet hurt? Buy her cute, comfortable shoes. Lost her umbrella? Buy her another. She’ll be touched – and she’ll know you’ve been paying attention.

DRESS FOR YOU, NOT HER.
Palicki swears she doesn’t recognise cologne or clothing brands no matter what guys wear. So stop worrying. Buy what boosts your confidence, not what you think women expect you to have. They can detect posturing, and they hate it. “Spending five hours to look messy is obvious!” Palicki says. “Guys, it’s so obvious.”

FIND FUNNY CLUES.
Palicki loves talking about Monty Python, which is a key insight into winning her over. Pay attention to anything that tells you about a woman’s sense of humour, and then match it for an instant, important connection. “We’re going to grow old, we’re going to get fat, but laughter lasts,” she says.
