Thanks in large part to the tepid global economy, very little in the way of breakthrough condom technology has reached the marketplace in recent years. Two arguable exceptions: the Skyn condom, sold by LifeStyles (available at local retailers) and the Avanti Bare (available at wantitall.co.za) sold by Durex. Both are made from polyisoprene, a new synthetic material that not only addresses the problem of latex allergies, but also lacks the smell and bitter taste of regular rubbers. Polyurethane condoms already offer these benefits; however, polyisoprene is said to be softer and stretchier, making it less likely to slip off or break during sex. Give polyisoprene a try – “The important thing is to find the condom, regardless of what material it’s made from, that you and your partner like the best,” says sex researcher
Dr Richard Crosby.
