Every guy has hoped about being with two women at once. This is seen as a common normality but when you start relishing in other fetishes like ‘Golden Showers’ that’s sexually deviant. A new research project, for the first time ever, has scientifically defined sexual deviation. The University of Montreal undertook this project and although there have been many theories surrounding deviant sexual fantasies that incorporate atypical fantasies know as paraphilia’s, none have actually described what these fantasies are.

The Journal of Sexual Medicine has answered that exact question of what are these unusual sexual fantasies.

“Clinically, we know what pathological sexual fantasies are: they involve non-consenting partners, they induce pain, or they are absolutely necessary in deriving satisfaction. But apart from that, what exactly are abnormal or atypical fantasies? To find out, we asked people in the general population, as simple as that,” said Christian Joyal, lead author of the study. “Our main objective was to specify norms in sexual fantasies, an essential step in defining pathologies,” he noted. “And as we suspected, there are a lot more common fantasies than atypical fantasies. So there is a certain amount of value judgment in the DSM-5.”

The DSM-5 is the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. So does having an atypical sexual fantasy make you mental?

The study involved 1517 Quebec adults, 800 men and 718 women, with a mean age of 30 years since previous studies around sexual fantasies are majorly conducted with university students and this project required a sample of adults willing to describe their sexual fantasies. The participants responded to a questionnaire describing their sexual fantasies as well as delving deeper by describing their favourite in detail.

What the study found was very interesting.

– The natures of sexual fantasies vary among the population as only a few can actually be considered statistically rare – sex with an animal, unusual – golden showers, cross-dressing, sex with a prostitute or abusing an intoxicated person and typical – sex in a romantic location (female), receiving oral sex or sex with two women (men).

– The study also confirms that men have more fantasies and describe them more vividly than women. It also highlights that a big proportion of women, 30%-60%, evoke themes of submissions associated to their fantasies like being tied up or spanked.

– Men however differ from women when wanting to act on their fantasies. Whilst men want theirs to come true, women who express more extreme fantasies of submission like being dominated by a stranger specify that they never want it to actually happen.

– Men also tend to fantasize about extramarital relationships compared to women who like having the presence of their significant other in their fantasies.

An intriguing finding from the study has to do with the large number of unique male fantasies. These include for example shemales, anal sex among heterosexuals and the ideas around watching their partner have sex with another man. Evolutionary biological theories can’t explain these fantasies, which are seen as typical desires of men but it allows the study to shed light on certain social phenomena like the popularity of 50 shades Of Grey amongst women for example.

“The subject is fascinating. We are currently conducting statistical analyses with the same data to demonstrate the existence of homogeneous subgroups of individuals based on combinations of fantasies. For example, people who have submission fantasies also often report domination fantasies. These two themes are therefore not exclusive, quite the contrary. They also seem associated with a higher level of satisfaction,” says Joyal.

Check out the list of unusual paraphilia’s to peak your curiosity:

Unusual sexual interests are categorised as paraphilias. Having one is not a sign of mental disorders unless it’s harmful towards someone else.

PARTIALISM
Having sexual interest in a specific but non-genital part of the body. Foot fetishes (podophilia) are the most common of them.  Armpits – maschalagnia, noses – nasophilia, hair – tricophilia and the rear – pygophilia.

KLISMAPHILIA
Getting sexual pleasures from the introduction of liquids into the body via the anus. Enemas are one way of doing this.

MASOCHISM
Getting aroused by beatings, bondage and humiliation. It also includes asphyxiophilia, which is deriving oneself of oxygen while masturbating.

UROPHILIA
Sexual excitement over urine either being peed on or peeing on someone.

TELEPHONE SCATALOGIA
Being turned on by making indecent phone calls.

PLUSHOPHILIA
A sexual interest in stuffed animals. Should not be confused with furries who are people that like anthropomorphic animals.

TROLISM
When people like to watch their partners have sex with someone else.

ACROTOMOPHILIA
The sexual interest in amputees as they consider amputee limbs erotically exciting.

DACRYPHILIA
People who are turned on by tears. Either the sight or sound of someone crying makes them aroused.
