It’s hard to keep up with a girl like Maryke Pieterse. Barely back from a three-week trip
to Bali, the model and acrobatic gymnast briefly stopped off at home in
Cape Town before jetting off again – this time to New York, where we eventually caught up with her. So how does a year-round jetsetter like Pieterse relax? With quick, easy
weekend breaks. Pieterse and her boyfriend, photographer Gavin Kleinschmidt (who took this shot
of her at the beach in Kommetjie, outside Cape Town), aim to make regular escapes
to unwind and reconnect. Use her three favourite weekend getaway tips to boost your own relationship ahead
of a sizzling hot summer.

HIT THE WATER… to boost her mood!
To unwind, Pieterse will spend time wakeboarding at Clanwilliam Dam. The fresh air does her good: according to a research review published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, exercising in natural environments can lead to “greater feelings of revitalisation, increased energy and positive engagement, together with decreases in tension, confusion, anger and depression”.

HEAD TO THE BEACH… to ramp up her sex drive!
For one of her favourite getaways, Pieterse will head to Yzerfontein on the West Coast, for a weekend of fish braais on the beach. There’s a takeout here for you too: eating alfresco could be your ticket to some pre-summer lovin’, according to studies by Boston State Hospital, which found that summer sunshine raises both your testosterone levels by 120%.

GO HOME… and live longer!
For the ultimate staycation, Pieterse will pop out to the family farm in Bela-Bela (Warmbaths), to enjoy
connecting with friends and family.
A similar move may be as beneficialfor you as avoiding cigarettes, according research published in PLoS Medicine. Pooling data from 148 studies, researchers found that people with stronger social relationships had, on average, a 50% increased chance of survival over the course of the studies.
