“I’ve only had two boyfriends in my life,” says Laura Vandervoort, each for five years (including her current guy). Serial monogamist? Clearly. But that makes the 26-year-old actress an expert on making a serious
relationship work. Try these three Vandervoort-approved relationship moves…

Move #1: The Year In Review

“Every year my boyfriend takes photos and videos of our lives, because they’re always so hectic. Then, for our anniversary, he makes a video montage set to music. We sit there and laugh at how crazy the year has been,” Vandervoort says. It’s brilliant: After a relationship is established, years can blend together and she might worry that you feel bored. Reminiscing shows her that you’re always excited about your time spent together.

Move #2: The Dutiful Tagalong

Vandervoort started doing hot yoga, and although her boyfriend was skeptical, he agreed to try a session with her once she told him she thought he’d like it. “He knew it would make me happy,” she says. When a woman predicts that you’ll like something, she’s really saying, “I know you well enough to say this.” Turn her down and you’re saying she’s wrong. Is she?

Move #3: The Inexhaustible Ear

“Women are constantly thinking about at least 10 things at once, and we have trouble shutting that dialogue off,” she says. “So let me talk and you be a voice of reason.” When Vandervoort was offered a big role that involved nudity, her man talked it out with her instead of pushing her towards a decision. When she finally turned the part down, she didn’t look back. “It’s because I had this other voice saying, ‘I completely respect you, understand your decision and agree with you; don’t worry.’ ”
