Lay the foundation for mixing business with pleasure
1 The Work Partner
Make sure her banter isn't just because you're stuck on the same project, says Toni Coleman, a psychotherapist and relationship coach. Try to hang one-on-one during the day, and don't talk about the job. Is she still sending vibes that are more bedroom than boardroom? Suggest an after-work drink.
2 The Direct Report (Either You or Her)
"You have to be prepared to say, 'I want this more than I want my job,'" Coleman says. If that's true and you're certain she feels the same way, talk to her about a game plan – including if and when one of you speaks to a supervisor about changing your current reporting relationship.
3 The Stranger
You're in luck. If things turn weird, at least you won't have to see her 17 times a day. The downside is that you'll have to work extra hard to get to know her – or even just break the ice. "Prepare a dating lift speech," says Coleman. "If you had only 30 seconds with someone, what would you say to get her attention?"
4 The new girl
She wants everyone to like her. Don't mistake this for romantic interest, says Coleman. Be helpful, but let her get her bearings in the office before you ask her out. Once she's more settled, you'll have a better sense of whether she's really interested or she's just smiling a lot because… she’s forgotten your name.
