A study in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness evaluated two groups of elderly men. These men were in their late 60’s and early 70’s and all of them were healthy. The researches wanted to compare their functional performance and quality of life. One group had 19 elderly men who were not athletic and the other was a group of 27 elderly men who were active long-distance runners.

The men ran on treadmills whilst their cardiopulmonary and metabolic statistics were evaluated. A questionnaire was used with four domains – physical, psychological, social relations and environment – to test their quality of life.

Researchers found that the elderly men who were active long-distance runners had better cardiopulmonary performances however they only had a better quality of life in some of the domains regardless of cardiopulmonary fitness levels.

If you think that you are out of shape now, imagine how it will be when you are older. Rather get your running shoes on and start making your way to a fitter, healthier and older you.
