The Diageo Reserve WORLD CLASS is the world’s leading mixology competition. It is also the leading luxury drinks programme elevating the craft known as bartending. They have been at it for six years and have been credited for setting international standards and trends in the cocktail world. Winners of this tournament get lifted into the limelight and become apart of the global bartending elite.
The recently announced host city for the 2015 WORLD CLASS Global finals is none other than our beloved Mother City, Cape Town. This is a significant step for the city coming of a number of recent accolades such as being named World Design Capital of 2014 as well as the World’s Top Travel Destination by the New York Times.
The announcement was made on the 1st of August in London where the Global finals saw 48 countries compete for the title of World’s Best Mixologist. This is the first time the event will take place on the African continent. There is no surprise that it is coming to our shores, as the city has become Africa’s creative capital with thriving design, tourism, lifestyle and art sectors.
“As the City of Cape Town we welcome the Global Finals as another addition to our events calendar as part of our efforts to secure Cape Town as the events capital of Africa. The Global Finals have been hosted by many major cities in the world and Cape Town is proud to be ranked among the best in the world. We look forward to hosting the many dynamic talents that will take part in the event.” Says Cape Town Executive Mayor Patricia de Lille.
In the years before the Global Final has been hosted by many iconic cities and venues around the world. This year’s event travelled from the Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland across to other opulent places like the Savoy and Dorchester hotels in London. 2013 saw the finals take place on the luxurious Azamara Journey cruise liner as it went around the Mediterranean from Nice to Barcelona.
“WORLD CLASS is all about anticipating trends, being at the forefront of fine drinking culture and always looking for new and exciting innovations in our industry. These are the key criteria we look at when we select the location of the Global Finals. Africa ticks all these boxes and more; it is a booming and ever-changing continent and we see it as a new frontier with huge potential. When we bring the WORLD CLASS global final to a location, it has the ability to fundamentally step change the fine drinking scene and we strongly believe this will be the case in 2015,” commented Matteo Fantacchiotti, Global Vice President Commercial, Diageo Reserve.
Cape Town is set to become not only the World Design Capital but in September 2015 the WORLD CLASS Cocktail Capital as well. Follow on Facebook for more information.
