Q: My kid hates to read. How do I encourage him to hit the books without making it seem like homework?

A: Some guys around my bar spell “light” the way Miller does. I say their dads fell down on the job. Step one: you go to the book shop, not him. Search the stacks and find a yarn the kid will actually like – something about sharks or magic worlds or insects he can gross out girls with.

Then – and this is your real duty – sit with him every night and read him a bit of the book. To jump-start his reading, you first have to rev his imagination. He’ll take it from there.
