Modern man craves a challenge. One that extends beyond the office desk and Facebook notifications, this partially explains the growing popularity of adventure races taking place around the world.

The latest adventure challenge to make its way to South Africa, the Spartan Race sponsored by Reebok, will take place on the 1st of November and it’s pulled out all the stops, from obstacles involving fire, mud and possibly a spear throw challenge or something equally crazy.

“The race will fiercely challenge its participants, at times making them question why they entered,” according to race organisers.

There’s also no way to really know what you’re getting yourself into, “Each Spartan Race is different as we work as much as possible with natural obstacles in the terrain. We then add obstacles such as flaming-logs and muddy-ditches to the course,” say the organisers.

There are two different race options. The Spartan Sprint, which is at least 5 kilometres long, and the Spartan Super which takes place over 12 kilometres.

The peeps who run the Spartan Races are pretty passionate about the challenge and have created a few enthralling videos like this one bellow.

There are no shortcuts either, If one of the obstacles proves too much for you, you’ll have to do 30 burpees before moving on.

For elite athletes there’s also an added level of competition. The Johannesburg event is 1 of around 100 Spartan races taking place all over the world this year, as race your time will be recorded – you can see where you stack up globally.

The Spartan Race should serve as ideal preparation for the Men’s Health Urbanathlon, an obstacle filled race taking place through the cityscape of Johannesburg on the 30th of November. The Urbanathlon has been described as “the ultimate test of endurance, strength, mobility and pure toughness.”
