Social media is a way to curate your image

People who scored higher in certain types of narcissism were more likely to use Facebook and Twitter, but the use of these social media varied by age group, according to this study by researchers at the University of Michigan. Researchers did personality assessments of 486 college undergrads and 93 adults. College students who scored higher in certain type of narcissism were more likely to use Twitter, while adult narcissists more frequently posted updates on Facebook. The college students used Twitter to boost their egos, according to the researchers. “Young people may overevaluate the importance of their opinions,” says lead author Elliot Panek. They use Twitter to broadcast their views and broaden their social circle. Adults use Facebook to control others’ perceptions of them. “It’s about curating your own image,” says Panek.
