Better less than nothing: a new study found that even small increases in physical activity can lead to better glucose balance. In the study of 1, 531 men and women, average age 66, 6 years, researchers found that higher physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) was linked to better insulin sensitivity and reduced insulin levels after eating. PAEE was objectively measured by having had participants wear accelerometers and heart rate monitors for a period of seven days. Light physical activity, such as walking and cycling or even light home activities were measured, and showed that as PAEE increased, insulin sensitivity increased and insulin levels post-meals decreased. Researchers suggest that to improve glucose metabolism in this age range, highly intense physical activity is not necessary – so brisk walking, cycling and more home-based activities is adequate.
