Obesity is still a major problem that many people struggle with on a daily basis. According to a new study by scientists at McGill University a miracle ingredient for fighting obesity may be found right in your pantry. The results of the study were so shocking that the scientists had to repeat the experiment to be sure.
What the study found was that a simple potato extract may be able to limit weight gain from a diet that is high in fat and refined carbs. To conduct the experiment the scientists fed mice an obesity-inducing diet for 10 weeks. The mice that started of at an average weight of 25g put on around 16g more after the 10 weeks. Mice who were also fed the same diet but with the potato extract gained much less weight at around 7g more.
The potato is known for it’s carb content but the extract benefits stem from the high concentration of polyphenols, which is a beneficial chemical found in fresh fruit and vegetables. The daily dose that was administered to the mice came from 30 potatoes. They study does not recommend someone eat 30 potatoes a day because of the high kilojoule count being very unhealthy. However they would think to make this extract available as a dietary supplement or as a simple cooking ingredient. Potatoes are also very cheap to produce and already make up the diets of many people around the world.
“We were astonished by the results,” said Prof. Luis Agellon, one of the study’s authors. “We thought this can’t be right – in fact, we ran the experiment again using a different batch of extract prepared from potatoes grown in another season, just to be certain.”
Mice and humans metabolize foods in very similar ways yet scientists still need to conduct clinical trials to be absolutely sure it will benefit humans as well. This will also need to change from man to woman due to the differing metabolism rates.
