THE GAIN

For most of my life I was skinny. Especially when I was in the army, as I was a physical training instructor. Unfortunately, I had bad eating habits and after I turned 24 I became less active and gained weight quickly. By the age of 28, I weighed 110kg. After a full physical examination by my doctor, my cholesterol was dangerously high. I became a type-2 diabetic because of my weight and I faced ongoing treatment for the rest of my life.

THE CHANGE

In 2006 my wife and I joined a local gym and exercised three times a week, focusing on circuits. One day I received an email from the gym owner, referring us to a personal trainer. I decided to approach her for some advice and she gave us two free sessions to make a final decision. After these two sessions, I decided to change my lifestyle and follow her eating plan and training programme.

THE STRATEGY

My long-term goal was to improve my health and appearance. My personal trainer put together a training programme and balanced nutritional plan. The programme comprised of four days of training a week, of which an hour was focused on weight training and 20 minutes devoted to cardio. I was motivated to never miss training or deviate from my nutritional plan. I had constant support from my family and trainer.THE RESULT I went from 110kg and 29 percent body fat to 77kg and 14 percent body fat within eight months. I shed a total of 33kg and 15 percent body fat. My trouser size went from 44cm to 30cm.

THE REWARD

My biggest gain was that, after eight months, I went for a full medical examination and was told that I could stop the cholesterol and sugar medication, as all my results were normal.
