DIY Home Improvement Helps White Collar Workers To Unleash Their Inner
Craftsman

Men use DIY home improvement to help improve their self image, but how they envision themselves depends on social class, according to this study. Researchers conducted in-depth interviews with men to see how they used DIY home improvement to develop their masculine identities. Among upper class men DIY home improvement allows them to escape the “burdens of knowledge work” and “unleash the suburban craftsman who relishes in physical labor,” according to the authors. However for lower class men DIY home improvement is not a therapeutic outlet. Rather, the home becomes a workplace and home improvement becomes a chore that is an essential part of the male territory. DIY home improvements allow lower class men to still provide their families with better homes even when their economic resources are limited.
