Do you know your watch’s movements? This always comes as
a surprise to non-watch enthusiasts – but not all luxury watch brands make their own. In fact, only a small proportion do. There are three sources of movements: those made in-house, those made by a third-party and modified in-house, and those that come from a third-party (such as ETA or Sellita) and are popped straight into a watch. Those brands that make their own are often referred to as manufacture brands (think factory, with gold door knobs and nice loos), including Patek Philippe, Rolex, Breguet, Zenith, Vacheron Constantin and Jaeger-LeCoultre. Change is afoot in the industry, however, with some brands taking movement manufacture in-house, including IWC, Panerai, Breitling and Omega.
