People are always looking for the optimal way to nourish their bodies without gaining weight. Depending on your personal goals, some work, some don’t. Some are sustainable; others are designed to be a once-off exercise in self-restraint and determination. There is no “one-size-fits-all” solution.
The best results come from experimenting with various ways of eating and listening to how your body responds.
These are the top three eating trends showing serious staying power in 2014 so far. Here’s the lowdown on how you can try them today:
What is it?
Entertaining the idea of vegetarianism but afraid to fully commit?
Flexitarians reap similar health benefits as those who follow a vegetarian diet by drastically cutting back on the amount of meat they consume and living in the words of Thomas Jefferson, who once said that meat should be treated only as a “condiment for the vegetables”.
There are no rules on how much meat you should allow, and individual preferences differ. The one thing all Flexitarians can agree on is that when consumed, meat should always be high-quality and the origins and living conditions of the beast known.
2.Banting / LCHF
What is it?
Tim Noakes has thrust Banting back into the nutritional spotlight with his latest co-authored offering, The Real Meal Revolution.
Basically, this Low-Carb High-Fat diet advises that you avoid all sugar, bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, porridge, breakfast cereals, all confectionery, high carb fruit like bananas and grapes, high-carb vegetables like parsnips, carrots, corn and peas, artificial sweeteners, ‘low-fat’ food which actually contains high sugar content. And remember to always read your labels for other sneaky sugars.
If the social media buzz is to be believed, this way of eating results in a real win-win: feeling great and shedding pounds.
When making carb-free bread, add milled flax to your almond flour. This will ensure the mixture going further as almond flour can end up being quite pricey.
What is it?
Arguably the most controversial eating trend doing the rounds at the moment, Juicing or Cleansing involves abstaining from consuming solid foods and gaining all nutrients from juiced fruit and vegetables. The health and weight-loss claims around this diet are unproven and many well-known nutritional experts have expressed concerns around the risks of following this plan long-term.
