Blueberries are inexpensive and delicious and there would be no harm in doing a little informal research on yourself.
Researchers in New Zealand report on a small study that suggests consuming five blueberry smoothies (each containing 200g blueberries, 50g banana, 200mL apple juice) before and after a bout of strenuous exercise may speed short-term muscle strength recovery compared to drinking the same beverage with 25g dextrose instead of the blueberries.
Antioxidant content of both beverages was similar, but the blueberry beverage had over five times the polyphenolic content, most of it anthocyanins (purple-blue pigment).
It is important to note that this study used rabbiteye blueberries (Vaccinium ashei a.k.a. V. virgatum) rather than the typical commercial blueberry sold in the U.S. (northern highbush a.k.a. Vaccinium corymbosum) and different species may have different properties.
Rabbiteye blueberries are native to the southeastern U.S. but can only be grown in hardiness Zones 7 – 9 and commercial production is limited.
