Around 150 runners took on the challenge of Red Bull Lion Heart in Cape Town, last at weekend in a brand new event created by trail runner Ryan Sandes.

The course was simple, but gruelling – up and down Lion’s Head mountain, which peaks at 669 metres above sea level.

After a qualifier time trial on Friday, of which our very own Arthur Jones, Renato Balona and Thamar Houliston entered, the top 32 battled it out in a knockout format on Saturday morning to discover who was the king of the hill.

It was AJ Calitz and Carla van Huyssteen who eventually tamed the Lion.

Ryan Sandes completed the race in third and was delighted at how the event turned out.

“I’m stoked,” he said. “Personally, today was challenging because I didn’t quite have the gas in my legs on the uphills so I had to make up some time on the way down. The day panned out exactly how I envisioned it. Well done to AJ for a great run – he stood out from the beginning. Huge thanks to SAN parks for making it possible,” he added.
