Megatron set a new receiving record last year. Then he went to work to improve even more.
Johnson does a deep-breathing drill to relax and help oxygenate his blood. “It’s a five count on the inhale and a five count on the exhale,” says his trainer, Tom Bender. It helps the Detroit Lions wide receiver manage his heart rate in workouts and games. Try it in the office or at home.
His leaping, twisting catches? Hard core. Johnson does weighted planks with counterbalance movements. For instance, he does 30-second single-arm planks while holding in his raised hand a band that Bender pulls. Oh yeah... he also has a weight plate on his hips.
To develop more leg power, Johnson does 3 sets of 5 stepups using dumbbells that weigh 85 percent of his 1-rep max. He also hits the beach barefoot to do a plyometric series: single-leg hops, knees-to-chest jumps, bounds, skaters, and lunges.
