Only if you can stomach the idea of spending more for less. Sure, packaged protein drinks are a convenient alternative to mixing them up at home, but you’ll end up spending about twice the price for that luxury, says nutrition advisor Alan Aragon. Plus, the grab-and-go kinds often contain artificial colours, preservatives and thickening agents, none of which are going to help you build muscle. You’re better off making your shakes from scratch, using a powder that lists whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate as the top two ingredients, says Aragon. Here are three of his minimalist formulas for maximum muscle.

Morning Mocha shake
1 frozen banana + 1 cup ice + 1 cup coffee + 1 scoop chocolate protein powder + 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa + 1 handful of walnuts

Peanut Butter Whey Shake
1 cup fat-free milk + 1 frozen banana + 1 cup ice + 1 tablespoon peanut butter + 1 scoop vanilla or chocolate protein powder

Protein-Packed Fruit Smoothie
1 cup fruit juice + 1 cup ice + ½ cup frozen berries + ½ frozen banana + 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
