Got moves like Jagger or two left feet?

A new study published in the American Journal of Human Biology suggests that men’s dance moves may provide clues about their physical qualities to women and to other men (potential rivals).

In the study, 30 males, aged 19-37, were recorded while dancing to a basic drum beat while researchers tested their cardiovascular fitness and measured their upper and lower body strength. The dance moves were then transferred to a virtual avatar, which were then shown to a group of men and women who rated each participant on dance quality.

Both men and women rated larger avatars with variable and faster arm movements as better dancers. Men also accurately rated upper body strength, which researchers suggest is a measure of hand-to-hand fighting threat in the avatars.

Physical fitness was however not linked to dance ability rating.
