How long do you need to be out of the country per year to not be liable to pay personal income tax?
South African residents who work abroad may be exempt from tax for services rendered outside of South Africa if they work outside of the country for more than 183 days in a 12 month period, of which 60 days must be continuous. This is known as the foreign earnings exemption. It’s worth noting that it only applies to remuneration earned for services rendered abroad. Therefore, even aperson who qualifies for this xemption will still remain subject to tax on his or her other income and capital gains.
What does the new driver demerit (or point) system involve?
The demerit system is not in operation as yet, but will be on a date proclaimed by the Minister of Transport in the Government Gazette. In terms of how the system works, each driver will be awarded 12 points annually on his driver’s licence and points will be deducted from this total for every traffic violation committed by the driver. For example, you’re caught travelling between 76 and 80km/h in a 60km/h zone, you’ll lose one point. No big deal? For every point deducted after you’ve exhausted all 12 points, you risk a three-month suspension of your licence. After three suspensions, it’ll be cancelled. You’re able to verify your point status at any driving licence centre.
What kind of rights do I have over the photos I publish on Facebook?
Usually you would own the copyright to the photos you take and the mere fact that you place them on Facebook would not strip you of your ownership rights. Facebook’s terms of service confirm that you own the content you post, but stipulate that you grant Facebook the licence to use any content you post on or in connection with Facebook. The licence terminates when you delete your account, unless you have shared your content with others and they have not deleted it. The licence is widely worded and it is arguable whether Facebook has the right to use the content only in connection with Facebook or for any other purpose. Ultimately: consider the kind of content you publish on Facebook very carefully.
