Can hypnosis improve my running?
Many of the world’s elite athletes consult psychologists who assist them in improving their performance. One of the techniques they use is hypnosis. Hypnosis has been shown to be effective for a range of issues – phobias, weightloss, addiction, anxiety, pain control and confidence. By harnessing your subconscious and unconscious mind, it works on the basic principle that the mind controls the body. Improving your mental toughness can help you cope better with challenges that tend to derail your performance, like nervousness, negative self-belief, pain, concentration, energy, endurance and motivation. It assists athletes to commit to a training programme and push it to its limits.
I grind my teeth in my sleep. I’ve been told it’s stress related. Can I try hypnosis to cure this?
Grinding your teeth, also referred to as “bruxism” is, in many cases, stress related. Ideally you should do three things: firstly, book an appointment with your dentist immediately to get a customised gum guard, which will protect your teeth from damage. Secondly, learn some relaxation techniques to implement before going to sleep, of which self-hypnosis is one. And lastly, try to figure out what is causing the stress and try to resolve it.
I still have nightmares of a bad car accident I was in six months ago. Any tips on making it stop?
As humans, we’re designed to cope with a lot. Certain frightening experiences, however, referred to by psychologists as “traumatic” experiences, may be deemed too much for us by our brains and lead to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The length of time that has passed since the trauma does not diminish the intensity of the symptoms, of which PTSD has many, with nightmares being a component. It’s likely to be what you’re suffering from. Seek help from a clinical psychologist who has expertise in the disorder, which is usually treated quickly and effectively.
