Wise Guy Convert Bottle Into a Glass
How To Turn A Beer Bottle Into A Glass
Warning: this stunt involves sharp edges, breaking glass and fire. But if you’re careful, it could also involve fun.

STEP 1:

Pick a brand with a sturdy but attractive bottle. (Try Grolsch or Darling Brew’s dumpie-style bottle. Corona’s also good, because the bottle is especially thick.) Tie a string tightly around the empty bottle just above the label.
STEP 2:

Slip the string off and soak it in lighter fluid. (Keep your fingers dry!)
STEP 3:

Put the string back on the bottle and light it. Hold the bottle horizontally and rotate it so the flame spreads. Wait to hear the bottle crack slightly, about 10 seconds.
STEP 4:

Pour cold water on the string. The top of the bottle will fall off.
STEP 5:

Sandpaper the edges until smooth.

Now show us how to use the neck of the bottle to make a stem and base for the glass.
does this work for wine bottles as well?
What grade of sandpaper do you recommend using?
I would use an old-fashioned grinding stone...I use these in making stained glass projects...it takes the sharp edges off very, very effectively. Take a look at this link to see what I'm talking about:

i think it work for wine bottle if the bottle is thin.

we tried about a dozen times. with alchol... with acetone... with cotton shoe lace, with cotton yarn.... it was always jagged and if it wasn't jagged there were cracks
Glass cutters are CHEAP and available at any hardware place. Use your internet skills to learn how to use one. It has to be done right, but that's not hard.
I used to heat the bottom of milk bottles and run it under the tap for doing hotknives. They always broke off cleanly. If you don't know what hotknives are, best not to ask.
You have noted very interesting details! ps nice website.
I like the idea. thanks ;)
Ooh, check me out, I mentioned 'hotknives', therefore I am cool. Most non-drug users know what things like hotknives and '420' mean, you know. It's not as exclusive, nor is it as cool, as you would have us believe.

I would put the cut part of the bottle into a fine sand, spin it around until the edges are smooth.
What a funny idea. Are you sure that it does work, really? I will try it out.
Yes it will work for wine bottles. It's how old blues players would.make glass guitar slides
Hotknives ARE cool. So hush your mouth.
I agree with hot knives being cool...

Any glass blower can blow out the neck so that it is as wide at the top as at the bottom. The only problem is that they are tippy because they are so tall. Great glasses though almost any company's bottles work.
Does it matter what kinda of string?
I want to try this at home
I think the language needs to be cleaned up in this post. I'm not a prude, but I think the "f" word is used much too liberally. This is a family site.
fuck
fuck
I was thinking about trying it this weekend when I do my beer bottle.
Great fun! I will try this sunday.
Awesome trick. Gonna try this as soon as I get home and see if the edges are smooth and need only a bit of sanding
We have plenty of milk bottles around where I live. Almost all of the grocery stores, both large chain and smaller local, sell local milk that come in many sizes ad are in glass bottles. They are not the round ones you see on tv but they are very easy to find (assuming your mom isn't still doing your shopping for you) looks like a fun idea, I'm not very crafty but might give it a try
I dont know if I'm doing something wrong but I have tried this 3 times now and the bottles break off all jagged and cracked. Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong
milk bottles still get delivered you morons, and yes by a milk man... A dying out profession. and also I'm 20
Amazing how people can insult each other anonymously , retards !

Do you recommend a specific kind of string? I have all sorts of string but they seem as though they would burn up before heating the glass.

Great fun! I was try and success.
Cool idea,
Random acts of lashing out at people because you live an insecure life . Not cool
Hot knives yes
And I'd be down to get milk at my door in a bottle
Why all the nastiness people?! I can't get this to work as the flame dies out quickly. I'm using post office string, could that be why?
Saw some kids in a Brazilian slum doing similar - they put the bottle on a turntable (record player, remember those?) and played a flame against it as it turned, producing heat in a very even circle. Then they touched a cotton bud dipped in water against the same place, and hey presto, a clean cut. I've always wanted to do it with some broken Weizenbier glasses I have (would make cool paperweights / shot glasses), but I suspect one needs a diamond wheel etc. (as Lyman Babbitt said) to get a smooth, secure finish.
