Top tip:"Be there. Often when something newsworthy has happened, by the time we arrive there are people on the scene already taking pictures. The most published picture of that plane that landed in the Hudson River was taken with an iPhone!"

"I use a couple of Nikon SLRs, mainly the D3, but the camera I have on me always is my cellphone, a Nokia E71. It's a 3mp camera and although I haven't taken any front-page pictures with it, one of our staff got one. There was a train crash and we were right up against deadline. There was simply no time to take a picture with an SLR, open a laptop to download it and send it off. The quality wasn’t brilliant but it was good enough."

Top tip:"Look throught the whole viewfinder, not just at what you're featuring. Often that's not where the real action is."

"When shooting MTB racing, I use a Canon 1D Mk3 with a wide lens and a 5D Mk2 with a long one. I also like the Canon S90 compact. It proves the megapixel race is over. It has 10mp, actually less than other compacts with 14mp, but has better noise suppression software. This means you can shoot in lower light or at a higher shutter speed because the image quality is so good at a high ISO."

"For paying work I have a medium format Mamiya digital setup, but the one I always keep with me is the G10, which is a great little camera. It's got a 6x zoom, manual controls and a very good auto function. For a camera with a fixed lens that you can just slide into your pocket, the results are extraordinary."

Top tip:"Stay out of the sun. Shooting in direct sunlight creates very unflattering images. Wait for sunset or go into the shade."

"I use mostly L prime lenses with my Canon 5D Mk2 for work, but sometimes it's good to have something that's easier to carry around. There's this new standard in sensors created by Olympus and Panasonic called Micro Four Thirds. The design is based on a rangefinder-style camera and they have interchangeable lenses, so you're not limited to one fixed lens. I'm salivating over the Panasonic GF1."

"I have a full Hasselblad digital system and a duplicate set for back up. When shooting celebrities on strict schedules there is no time for malfunctions. For snaps I use my old G9. There's almost no delay. I love it."
