5 cameras the pros use, plus their compact back-ups

Find out what people who make a living out of photography use for both professional shots and compact snaps

    Top tip:
"Be there. Often when something newsworthy has happened, by the time we arrive there are people on the scene already taking pictures. The most published picture of that plane that landed in the Hudson River was taken with an iPhone!"
Andrew Ingram is an international award-winning photographer with a long career in newspapers. He is currently Deputy Illustrations Editor at Independent Newspapers.

    Cameras:
"I use a couple of Nikon SLRs, mainly the D3, but the camera I have on me always is my cellphone, a Nokia E71. It's a 3mp camera and although I haven't taken any front-page pictures with it, one of our staff got one. There was a train crash and we were right up against deadline. There was simply no time to take a picture with an SLR, open a laptop to download it and send it off. The quality wasn’t brilliant but it was good enough."

"Look throught the whole viewfinder, not just at what you're featuring. Often that's not where the real action is."
Gary Perkin is the chief photographer of the Absa Cape Epic and an official UCI mountain bike photographer. He was recently awarded Photographer of the Year at the Velo Arto competition in Canada.

The Action Man - Gary Perkin
    Cameras:
"When shooting MTB racing, I use a Canon 1D Mk3 with a wide lens and a 5D Mk2 with a long one. I also like the Canon S90 compact. It proves the megapixel race is over. It has 10mp, actually less than other compacts with 14mp, but has better noise suppression software. This means you can shoot in lower light or at a higher shutter speed because the image quality is so good at a high ISO."

"Look up and look down. Not everything happens at eye level. Keep your camera ready."
Harry de Zitter is arguably South Africa's most renowned name in the advertising field, famous for his rich, romantic landscapes. He currently lives and works in the US.

The Ad Guy - Harry de Zitter
    Cameras:
"For paying work I have a medium format Mamiya digital setup, but the one I always keep with me is the G10, which is a great little camera. It's got a 6x zoom, manual controls and a very good auto function. For a camera with a fixed lens that you can just slide into your pocket, the results are extraordinary."

    Top tip:
"Stay out of the sun. Shooting in direct sunlight creates very unflattering images. Wait for sunset or go into the shade."
Morne van Zyl is regarded as the next big thing in South African photography circles. His work ranges from fine art and portraiture to high-budget advertising campaigns.

The Portrait Guy - Morne van Zyl
    Cameras:
"I use mostly L prime lenses with my Canon 5D Mk2 for work, but sometimes it's good to have something that's easier to carry around. There's this new standard in sensors created by Olympus and Panasonic called Micro Four Thirds. The design is based on a rangefinder-style camera and they have interchangeable lenses, so you're not limited to one fixed lens. I'm salivating over the Panasonic GF1."

    Cameras:
"I have a full Hasselblad digital system and a duplicate set for back up. When shooting celebrities on strict schedules there is no time for malfunctions. For snaps I use my old G9. There's almost no delay. I love it."
