Q&A with Alberto Aquilani
What is the best piece of style advice you’ve ever been given (and by whom)?
I like having my own style and don’t really take fashion advice from anybody. When my girlfriend appreciates my style, I’m happy.
Your career keeps you incredibly busy. How do you balance your personal and private lives?
Football is a big part of my life. When I’m not playing, I like being with my family and friends, and I like travelling, watching movies or playing golf.
You’re invited to many glamorous events – how do you keep your style looking original?
I prefer wearing casual clothes normally, but I like to be seen in smart clothing when at an event.
Being in the media spotlight means you always have to look good. How do you keep that up?
I try to be myself and I don’t like to look too flashy, whether on or off the field. I always like to feel comfortable.
What are you most looking forward to about playing at the Fifa World Cup in South Africa?
The World Cup is the most important competition in football and one that all players dream of participating in. I think
it will be a great World Cup in South Africa and I will enjoy everything about it.
What challenges do you expect to face at this year’s World Cup – on and off the field?
Italy won the World Cup four years ago, so Italian fans have high expectations, but there are other very strong teams and it will be difficult.
The Fifa World Cup is only a month long, but you have to play up to seven games. How do you stay focused, and what do you do to help your body recover in-between games?
During the World Cup the teams play many games in a short time, but it’s a competition, in the end, so it’s important players stay focused. After training, players should rest as much as possible to recover for the next game.
The pressure during the World Cup is immense, and your squad will spend a lot of time together, living in close quarters. How do you maintain harmony within the squad?
We maintain harmony in the team because we are a good group of friends off the field. Like most young people we play cards and Playstation, so spending a lot of time together is not a problem.
What advice can you give young South African soccer players who would like to one day be in your position?
I recommend getting involved in football at a young age and always enjoying the game. It is very important that young players believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.
